Jesse Kingston doesn’t want to go home to Bristol, NY, but his boss has ordered him to do so. Jesse loves his job as a NY State forest ranger, and the Adirondack Mountains forests have been his only home for a long time. His job is the one thing he’s been able to commit himself to wholeheartedly with the total assurance that he won’t be hurt. And now, even that has turned on him. His boss has given him an ultimatum – go home and get his head on straight or hand in his resignation. But what does he have back there? A family that he’s never felt close to and a house with his name on the deed. However, that this kind of emotional detachment may be just what he needs to get his life back into perspective. At least in Bristol he won’t have constant reminders that, three months ago, he’d let his best friend, Paul Jackson, die in a firestorm. But when he gets home he meets Karen Ellis, pregnant with Paul’s child and looking for answers Jesse can’t give her. Added to his dilemma about this beautiful woman is the way she sees beneath his facade of indifference and wraps herself around his heart as no other human being ever has.

Karen Ellis, a professional, freelance photographer, is four months pregnant with Paul Jackson’s baby. She knows her baby’s father is dead, but that’s all she knows. All she was told by the officer at the ranger station was Paul had perished in a wildfire. Because she’s not a relative, they won’t give her more details. Karen has suspicions about Paul’s death. He’d won numerous awards for safety and was considered by his fellow rangers to be a top notch at his job. That he would risk his life by intentionally walking into a situation that had all the earmarks of becoming a deadly firestorm just didn’t make sense. She has a baby coming who needs a family and, for her own peace of mind, she needs an explanation to settle the questions she has about how Paul died. The one person who might be able to give them to her is Jesse Kingston. When she finally meets Jesse, she realizes that what she thought was love she had for Paul is nothing in comparison to what she’s feeling for this brooding man who distances himself from those who love him–including her.

".....The dynamic characters and mystery hook the readers right into the story.  But it's the overarching themes of family and belonging that make it a winner...."

Firefighter, Samantha (Sam) Ellis, wants three things: to live in her beloved house (the first home she’s ever known), do her job to the best of her abilities and to get Detective AJ Branson out of her head and possibly her heart. But now that some maniac is trying to kill her, AJ is sticking to her like glue and due to the threats made on her life, the chief has suspended her from active duty. Though she hates both restrictions, she can't say that she blames either of them. After all, so far she’s nearly had her house burned around her while she slept, had her car blown up, and been trapped with faulty firefighting equipment in a burning building. The problem is, her would-be killer can eventually be caught, but she’s not sure she can ever remove AJ from her heart. AJ has the reputation of running as soon as a relationship gets serious, and Sam wants stability and a home. AJ means heartache, and with a father that walked out on his family, a mother who dragged her from child beauty pageant to beauty pageant, and a sister who holds her responsible for a lousy childhood, Sam has had enough heartache to last a lifetime.

Detective AJ Branson is falling hard and fast for Sam, and it scares him half to death. Relationships have never been his strong suit and he’s had enough of the pain that accompanies them. He has an offer of a job fifteen hundred miles away, which would put a lot of distance between himself and the temptation of Sam. But he can't leave until he knows she’s safe. The problem is, the longer he stays, the less he wants to leave her. When Sam finds his letter of acceptance for the job, a letter he forgot to destroy when he decided to stay, she sees it as one more betrayal by someone she loves. When the killer gets desperate, he traps Sam and AJ in Sam’s house and sets fire to it hoping to kill both of them. The only way out is for them to trust and rely on each other. To find the happiness they both seek, AJ must trust in love again and Sam must learn that not everyone is going to betray her.

Ms. Sinclair writes in a style which lets me actually sense the intensely fervent emotions from this couple, and I could feel the elation or even the desperation in their every thought, word or deed. ... BAPTISM IN FIRE is rich with emotion and ... escalating danger ... remarkable story.
